A friend of mine has a.32 cal rimfire and we are trying to determine the value. The barrel markings are J Stevens A & T Company, Chicopee Fals, Massachusetts Patent 1864. The barrel and trigger guards have the numbers 32849 engraved.
I envision this effort to be more than just the J. Stevens arms. As you know, the company produced a wide array of tools, mostly machinist tools, as well as involvement in the automotive industry. Serial numbers wont do much good with Stevens, as it seems they didn't assemble in any particular order. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Stevens records are long gone, and no serial number chronology exists for them. Even the Savage historian John Callahan can't accurately date them. Best we can say is that if it is marked J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. It is from 1908 to 1916 and if marked J. Stevens Arms Co. 1916 to 1931.
I don't know if this is a serial number or model number. The barrell is octagon in shape. The main difference between it and pictures currently online is that the trigger guard is a double loop but the back loop is fully enclosed. It appears someone tried to clean the outside of the barrell, but everything else appears untouched. The gun was obtained by his grandfather in 1872.
